BOOK REVIEW
Book: Emotionally Healthy Spirituality
Author: Peter Scazzero
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is a book by Peter Scazzero. It has sold more than 500,000 copies and has a companion workbook you can buy in addition with eight sessions that can be used for a Bible study or personal development.
I was introduced to the book with an invitation to join the Santa Clara Corps for a Bible study group. Though unable to attend, I was intrigued because I was sure that I was both spiritually and emotionally healthy so this may be source of reinforcing my maturity in Christ as I sought to encourage others. We always have room for growth!
The book outlines ten top symptoms of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Matthew 11:30 says, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV) When we lack in emotional healthy spirituality, the yoke may feel more like a ball and chain. This book digs beneath the surface and allows for the possibility of deep changes to your relationship to God, to others, and to the ministry we are called to by God.
Like the parables of Jesus that He used to help us understand what He was teaching the disciples and us now, this book uses an iceberg that gives a picture of the ten percent that is seen in the mirror and by others. It shows the ninety percent that is below the surface that may have been dormant for years but affects our spiritual and emotional maturity. We do not realize it is there or how deep it may go.
I recommend this book for the brave reader that “…unpacks core biblical principles to guide you into an experience of lasting, beneath-the-surface transformation in your relationship with Christ.” (Back cover)
