BOOK REVIEW

Book: The Ragamuffin Gospel

Author: Brennan Manning

One of my all-time favorite books is The Ragamuffin Gospel by author Brennan Manning. It is not a new book, but in my opinion, one that stands the test of time and never gets old. For those who may feel that God’s grace and love is something for which you have to perform or work; for those who may feel that God could not possibly love you because of where you have been or what you have done; for those who need to seek God’s forgiveness on a daily basis – this book is a must read.

Critics would say that Manning makes living in God’s grace sound too easy, too cheap. But isn’t that the point? Grace is not something to be earned, nor can we claim to deserve it. And it certainly is not cheap. The gift of grace is just that – God’s gift to all of us – and not one of us deserve it.

Many of us struggle to simply accept that gift and relax in God’s love. Like it or not, we are all ragamuffins; flawed, struggling, prone-to-sin individuals in need of God’s forgiveness, grace and mercy. If you need a fresh reminder that nothing can separate you from the unconditional love of Jesus, pick up this book. And as you read it, allow yourself to feel God smiling over you as Manning reminds you of God’s relentless, furious, pursuing love.
