October 2018 — Celebrate the Harvest

October 2018 — Celebrate the Harvest

Introduction

This program focuses on ways we can support the cadets who are preparing for the ministry at The Salvation Army College for Officer Training (CFOT).

Decorations

  • Print out photos of the cadets currently in training. These can be found on The Salvation Army database. Cut them out and glue the image unto cardboard and place them on painted wooden sticks. Put tissue paper in vases and place the pictures of the cadets in the vases. This will give the women a visual picture of the recipients of the service project.
  • Cover the tables with red, yellow and blue tablecloths, representing the colors of The Salvation Army flag.
  • Print placemats of the buildings at CFOT, which will provide an additional visual image of where the cadets are being trained.

Refreshments

Serve refreshments that remind us of Fall: pumpkin bread, caramel apples, apple cider and harvest mix snacks.

Service Projects

Option One: Encourage the women to purchase at least one five–dollar gift card from places the cadets could use during their training experience—Starbucks®, Walgreens®, Target®, Walmart®, or a grocery store. Ask each woman to write an encouraging note card to the cadet she chooses. Place the gift card inside an envelope and send to the cadet. The corps could bridge this project by inviting other groups within the corps to participate as well.

Option Two: Invite the women to participate in making survival study boxes for the cadets. You may want to survey the cadets ahead of time to ascertain what would be helpful for them. Some suggestions are: snacks, school supplies, stamps.

Option Three: Choose a cadet to adopt during their time in CFOT. They would be remembered on special days—birthdays, anniversaries, Valentines Day, Thanksgiving and Easter by sending notes of encouragement and a small gift. Of most importance, assure the cadets of the group’s prayer support.

Option Four: Support the fundraisers that The Salvation Army Training College promotes.

Be a Worker for the Harvest

Read Scripture Luke 10:2

This Scripture reminds us to keep our focus on the harvest for souls. It tells us that the “harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” There are so many people still to win for the Kingdom. We need to keep introducing people to the Lord so they can become workers, introducing others to Him.

How many of us when we were children grew up dreaming about achieving a certain occupation? We wanted to be a movie star, a fireman, Miss America, a world traveler or maybe even Snow White. Who did you want to be when you were young? What happened to your wishes? (Give time for discussion.)

Most of us probably never dreamed of being a servant of God. But God chooses us to be a worker for the harvest. When I was young, I dreamed of being a movie star, but my wishes didn’t come true. Instead I became a Salvation Army officer, and God has used me to do some amazing things for Him. I have made videos, been on television and the radio. It’s not quite being a movie star, but God has used me for harvesting souls. I haven’t been Miss America, but I have worked with the organization at events and state contests. I’m not a world traveler, but I have traveled the world. As far as Snow White goes, I have portrayed her for so many events, using that image to harvest people for the Kingdom. There’s nothing like a good princess party for outreach.

To me there is nothing better than harvesting souls. I would love for all of you to become cadets and then officers, but this is probably not realistic. But all of you can be workers in the harvest right where you are. God needs all of us to work while the fields are so ready for harvest. How do you think you could be a worker in your community and church? (Allow time for the women to discuss this.) Keep your focus on God and always be available whenever He brings people into your life who needs to hear the gospel.

Closing

Have special prayer time for the cadets and the workers needed for the harvest of souls.
