November 2026 – Service and Sacrifice

Service and Sacrifice

Scripture: “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13, NLT).

Introduction

On November 11th we observe Veteran’s Day. It is dedicated to honoring men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The day was originally called Armistice Day and was established in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I which took place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. After World War II and the Korean War, the day was renamed Veteran’s Day to recognize all American veterans.

There are many ways we can honor the veterans in our communities. The following are a couple of examples of activities you can do to show veterans that they are appreciated and valued.

  1. Take the time to simply express gratitude. A simple “thank you for your service” can go a long way in letting a veteran know that their sacrifice is not forgotten. Consider writing letters of appreciation or making cards to deliver to a Veteran’s Administration Hospital, VA care center, or an organization like the VFW.
  2. Practice acts of service in your own life. Sacrificial love is not limited to those in military uniform. We can honor our heroes by showing their spirit of service in our daily lives. Look for opportunities to serve others in your community—whether it’s helping a neighbor, volunteering, or supporting those in need however you are able. Every act of kindness done for others reflects the sacrificial love that Jesus shared about in John 13:15.
  3. Educate others and advocate for veterans. Take the time to share the stories of veterans and their sacrifices with your community. Whether through social media, church gatherings, or local events, educating others about the experiences of those who have served fosters a culture of appreciation and respect. Advocacy for veterans’ rights and issues is another important way to honor their sacrifices. Take the time to learn about issues that veterans face, and then share with others what you have learned.
  4. Spend some time in prayer for veterans. Prayer is a powerful tool. Commit to praying for veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. Pray for their protection, healing, and peace. Acknowledge the emotional and psychological toll that service can take and ask God to provide comfort and strength.
  5. Be An Example As followers of Christ, we are called to be examples of His love to the world. Our verse today reminds us that the greatest love involves sacrifice. Most of us will never have to face the same life-and-death situations and intense circumstances that veterans have, but we can still live lives that are marked by selflessness. On a practical level, this means making choices that prioritize the needs of others, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable to us.
  6. Refection Take a few moments to reflect on your own life. Are there ways that you can incorporate selfless service into your own daily routine? Whether it’s by spending time volunteering for a need in your community, helping a friend or family member, or simply being there for someone who needs a listening and caring ear, we can all show the love of Jesus to others by taking the time to serve. And every time we do, we honor the legacy of those veterans who have sacrificed for us.

No Greater Love

On this day, we take the time to honor those who have served in the United States military. The service and sacrifice we see in the actions of our veterans reflects the type of love that Jesus spoke of in John 15:13. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” When Jesus said these words, He was preparing His disciples for His impending crucifixion, the greatest act of love the world will ever see. Jesus, the Son of God, would lay down His life, not only for His friends but for all of humanity, demonstrating for us the highest love. When a person chooses to put the needs and interests of others ahead of their own, they are reflecting the same type of love that Jesus showed.

When an individual decides to enlist in the military, they are showing that they are willing to risk their lives for the rights and freedoms of others. The sacrifices made often involve great personal cost as during deployments they spend long periods of time separated from friends and family. The conditions in which they work can be harsh and are generally without any of the comforts of home. By willingly choosing to make these sacrifices, they are putting the needs of others ahead of themselves. This kind of sacrificial service is not commonly seen, and it merits our respect and gratitude. In the light of this, we want to take the time to recognize these heroes in our lives and communities.

Discussion Questions:

Break into small groups to discuss the following questions:

  1. How can we as a church support veterans and their families in our community?
  2. Considering the sacrifices made by veterans, what does it mean to serve others in our daily lives?
  3. What are ways that we can pray for those who have served? What about for those that are currently serving?
  4. How can we honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in service?
