Finders Keepers
Have you ever used the phrase “Finders Keepers?” If my older brothers left money around the house, I would use this phrase but unfortunately it never seemed to work. The phrase “finders keepers” has another title that comes from an old English law called “the law of treasure trove.” If the item was found anywhere other than hidden underground, it could be claimed. Otherwise, it belonged to the queen or king. An example of this would be shipwrecks. Anyone who finds the wreck could then file a salvage claim on it and place a lien on the vessel, and subsequently start removing items from the shipwreck.
In 2 Kings 22-23, King Josiah, at an early age, finds God’s Law hidden within the palace. When the Law was found, the king had a heart that was responsive to what God had said. King Josiah led the nation in repentance over its failure to obey the Word over a span of many years. With that repentance came a recommitment to not merely read the Law, but to act upon it. With King Josiah leading the way, the nation had now put itself under the authority of the Word of God. King Josiah led the way in sharing the importance of storing Scripture within the heart to keep from stumbling apart from it.
King David was aware of the treasure of God’s Word hidden within the heart. He shares in Psalm 119:11, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (NIV). Proverbs 2:6 speaks of searching God’s wisdom out more than anything else. Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (NIV).
When seeking out the treasure of God’s Word and putting it to use as King Josiah did, we find that we become abundantly wealthy in Godly purpose. God gives us the precious gift of His love letter to us, the Bible, to not just be aware of it and study it but also to live it aloud. In James 1 we are encouraged to take God’s Word to heart in all we do and speak. James shares in James 1:22-25, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do” (NIV). King Josiah not only found the treasure of God’s Word, but he put it into action when he called the nation to repent of their past ways and put God’s law as priority in the lives of those under King Josiah’s leadership.
How can we become “finders keepers” as recipients of God’s Word. My challenge to you is to seek His Word out each day, ask God how He wants you to respond and ask the Holy Spirit to help you live God’s Word out each day knowing that this precious treasure God has entrusted to you is in good hands all due to the amazing sacrifice Jesus provided on your behalf.
Prayer – Father, make Your word more precious to me than any pleasure in my life. (see Psalm 119:103, 127).
