Why Our Heart Health Matters
Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6, 4:23, Philippians 4:6-8
Setup
Since this program is around Valentine’s Day cover your tables with red or pink tablecloths. Add heart confetti on your table. Check Pinterest for many more heart decorating ideas.
Food
As this program is about our heart health, serve healthy snacks and beverages. You can get a fruit or vegetable tray, with cheese and crackers for that added protein.
Activity
- Organize a prayer walk. This not only addresses the physical heart health but also the spiritual one. Ask the women if there is anything pressing on their hearts to pray for. The walk does not have to be long. You can either walk around the inside of your building, outside of it, or take them somewhere beautiful outside.
- Do Christian Zumba! This is a fun one whether you dance or not. Here are a couple of videos on Youtube if you want some ideas of how to do this:

- Ask a health professional to come and speak to the women about the importance of having a healthy heart; how to do that, and what are the symptoms of a heart attack to look out for and what to do. You can also show videos that give great information on this if you can’t get someone to come in:

The Heart
In February we celebrate Valentine’s Day. This is a time of year when we think about the heart— the emotional heart. But what about our physical heart? What about our spiritual one? In the Bible, the Hebrew word for heart is leb which means, “inner man, mind, will, heart … mind, memory … emotions.” This is the word used in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” The heart was not just separated into different parts, it was all connected.
The heart is the center of a person, which contained the emotions, the will, and the mind. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” We need to guard our hearts, physical, emotional, mentally and spiritual. What we put in our bodies, what we choose to put in our minds, what comes out in our words, and how we behave are all important. Have you ever heard the saying, “Garbage in, garbage out?” The same is true for the good things we put in, the godly things.
For our physical hearts, to keep them healthy, we need to not just eat better, drink more water, and exercise more, we also need to manage our stress. If we don’t know how to manage it, stress can do so much damage to our bodies. If you struggle with chronic stress or with depression and anxiety, know that seeking professional help is a good thing. God used a godly Christian counselor during a time I really needed it. When I wasn’t handling things well.
Our spiritual hearts are much the same as our physical hearts. If we don’t take care of it, then we can have a spiritual heart attack. It is so important that we stay in God’s Word. We need to be consistent with our time with Him, even if the time of day or way we do it isn’t consistent. Maybe one day you wake up early and spend solid time in prayer and reading His Word. On another day you listen to the Bible app on your phone and think about what you heard all day and how to apply that to your life. Write down memory verses on sticky notes and leave them around your home or office, is another way to feed your spiritual heart. Whatever you do, just be consistent in His Word and in prayer.
Read Philippians 4:6-8. Instead of dwelling on the anxieties of life, or dwelling on the past mistakes, dwelling on the future. Give your anxieties, your problem to the Lord and fix your mind of things of Him. Ask these questions and earnestly seek His answers. Who is God? What is His character? How much does He love you? What answers to prayer has He given you? How has He helped you through a rough time? What did Jesus do for you on the cross? What has God freed you from? What has He blessed you with? Focus on the godly and good things and not the negative things.
You may need to take a break from social media and watching the news. Things today can be very negative and scary and if that’s all we are putting in our minds, it eventually will come out in how we live our lives and what we say.
Remember not to just take care of your physical heart, but also your spiritual heart as well.
