April 2027 – Awaken Your Senses

Awaken Your Senses

Scripture:      Psalm 34:8, Revelation 3:22, 1 Timothy 5:22, 2 Corinthians 2:14-15, Psalm 119:18

Introduction

God created us with five amazing senses. These senses make life more enjoyable. Today we will have some fun with our five senses and be reminded how to use them to worship God.

Program Ideas

Taste Activity

Ask the women to bring a snack to share. It should be one that brings back memories for them.

Scripture Reference: “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”  Psalm 34:8

Sound Activity

“Name That Tune Music Trivia Game” Check YouTube for suggestions.

Scripture Reference: “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Rev. 3:22).

Touch Activity

Blind Touch – Using a box you can put your arms around (like a hug), cut holes in the side for players to put their arms in to feel the item inside. Cut the front of the box off for easier access to place items in and allow others to see what the item is. Gather a variety of unusual items (mayo, syrup, jelly, cooked spaghetti, pokey plants, water balloon). Make sure the women cannot see the items. The player stands behind the table with their back to the box. Show the women what you are putting in the box. Have the player turn around, put their hands in holes on the sides of the box and begin feeling the item. Once they guess the item (or give up) it is the next person’s turn.

Scripture Reference:  Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22

Smell Activity

The nose knows memory game. Using 3-5 strong smelling things, place each item in two open containers (there should be 6-10 containers). Players will put on a blindfold and use their sense of smell to match the items in the containers.

Scripture Reference:

“But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” 2 Cor. 2:14-15

Sight Activity

Paper plate drawing game. Give each player a pencil and a non-coated, white paper plate. Each player should hold the paper plate on her head and be ready to draw on it with the pencil.

Read these directions aloud for the players to follow:

  1. Draw grass on the ground.
  2. Draw the sun with rays in the sky.
  3. Draw two flowers in the grass that are not touching.
  4. Draw 2 birds in the sky under the sun.
  5. Draw a ball between the flowers.
  6. Draw one cloud in the sky next to the sun.

Take the plate off your head and look at your crazy drawing. If you want to score the

drawing give yourself points if you –

  • Score 1 point if the sun is in the sky.
  • Score 1 point if none of the sun’s rays overlap.
  • Score 1 point if your flowers do not touch.
  • Score 1 point if your flowers are in the grass.
  • Score 2 points if your birds are under the sun.
  • Score 1 point if your ball is in between the flowers.
  • Score 1 point if your cloud is not touching any grass or flowers.

Want to Play Again?

Read these directions aloud for the players to follow:

  1. Draw a campfire on the ground.
  2. Draw the moon in the sky.
  3. Draw three stars that are in a straight line.
  4. Draw a tree next to the campfire.
  5. Draw a triangle for a tent under the moon.
  6. Draw a marshmallow on a stick over the campfire but not touching the fire.

Take the plate off your head and look at your crazy drawing. If you want to score the

drawing give yourself points if you –

  • Score 1 point if the campfire is on the ground.
  • Score 1 point if the moon is near the top of the drawing.
  • Score 2 points if your three stars are in a straight line.
  • Score 1 point if your tree is next to the campfire.
  • Score 2 points if your tent is under the moon.
  • Score 2 points if your marshmallow is on a stick over the fire but not touching it.

Scripture Reference: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18.

Awaken Your Senses

Today we had fun with our senses, but have you ever thought about how you can use your senses to worship God? If so, how well are you using your senses to worship Him?

I don’t always get this right. I get so busy doing that I get lost during the busyness. What is worse, I look for my worth in what I have accomplished. Yes, I am using my hands, but is what I am using them for bringing worship and honor to God? Is it keeping me from using my other senses to worship God? I know I have asked a lot of questions, but the real question is, what do we do when we find we are falling short in using our senses to worship God? The answer is to find the truth in God’s word by ask the following questions:

How is my taste?

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. Psalm 34:8. Additional verses: Psalm 119:103, Hebrews 6:4-5, 1 Peter 2:2-3

What am I listening to?

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Revelation 3:22. Additional verses: Psalm 40:6, Proverbs 25:12, Isaiah 30:21, Matthew 13:16, Mark 4:23-24, Romans 10:17, 2 Timothy 4:3-4, James 1:19

Are my hands clean?

Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22. Additional verses: Job 17:9, Psalm 134:2, Psalm 90:17, Ecclesiastes 9:10, Acts 19:6, 1 Timothy 2:8, 2 Timothy 1:6, James 4:8

What kind of smell am I exhaling around me?

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:14-15. Additional verses: Psalm 141:2, Ezekiel 20:41, Ephesians 5:2

How is my vision?

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18. Additional verses: Psalm 101:3, Matthew 6:22, Matthew 13:16, Ephesians 1:18

The next time you find yourself caught in the business of being busy, stop and ask how you are using your senses to worship God.

Reflection Song

1) O be careful little eyes what you see

O be careful little eyes what you see

For the Father up above

Is looking down in love

So, be careful little eyes what you see

2) Oh be careful little ears what you hear

3) Oh be careful little tongue what you say

4) Oh be careful little hands what you do

5) Oh be careful little feet where you go

6) Oh be careful little heart whom you trust

7) Oh be careful little mind what you think
